The ShorelineSmart City, Ricasoli, Malta Smart City Malta was launched in September 2007, on the eve of the global financial crisis, as a technology and business par. The intention was to create 100,000 square metres of employment space housing up to 11,000 workers. The Shoreline was conceived in 2017 with the idea of introducing residential and retail to what was effectively a stalled business park, thereby injecting life into the wider project. Development Solutions was commissioned to work with the design team to advise the right mix of occupier type and retailer names. We were also briefed to give the design team input that would optimise the investment value management of this retail mall. This involved analysing and understanding the wider retail offer in Malta where we had been involved for a decade, advising on other retail and hospitality based projects. The Shoreline Residence, which will rise above a fully-fledged shopping mall comprising of 2 double height levels, with a further 3 levels of underground parking optimized for maximum convenience and ease of access. With a floor area of 25,000 sqm The Shoreline Mall will be the largest retail facility in Malta. Designed by Haskoll, a leading UK architectural firm, one of the key elements is a huge glass atrium which enables natural light to illuminate the heart of the Mall on both floors. Comprising around 44 separate outlets, as well as a food court and a number of pop-up retail spaces, The Shoreline Mall will offer customers an eclectic mix of retail, leisure, entertainment and catering – all situated in a safe, clean and unpolluted car-free environment just on the water’s edge – and is expected to become one of the premier destinations in the Southern part of Malta.
